The state’s name comes from the mixture of three Nahuatl words: xalli, which means sand, ixtli, face or surface and the ending of -co, it means, thus, “On the surface of sand” or “In the sand “. For several centuries, until about 1836, Jalisco “Xalisco” was written with initial X.
